What is Riopan and what is it used for?
Riopan contains the active ingredient magaldrate and is used to treat heartburn and acid reflux.
Magaldrate binds excess stomach acid without causing an excessive counter-regulation of acid production. In addition, bile acids, which can irritate the stomach, are bound. The natural digestive function is maintained.
The effect usually lasts for several hours.
Application and Dosage
Take the medicine according to the package leaflet or medical instructions.
Usual dosage:
- If needed, 1 chewable tablet for symptoms
Standard application:
- 1 chewable tablet
- approx. 1 hour after meals
- and before bedtime
- up to 4 times daily
For more severe symptoms:
- Increase to up to 8 doses daily possible
Maximum daily dose:
- 8 chewable tablets (corresponds to 6400 mg magaldrate)
Method of application
- Suck or chew chewable tablets thoroughly
Duration of application
- Take until symptoms subside
- Do not use for longer than 14 days without medical clarification
If symptoms persist, recur, or worsen, a doctor should be consulted.
Notes
Children and adolescents:
- Not recommended for children under 12 years
- 12–18 years only with medical prescription
Kidney function:
- Use only under medical supervision in cases of severely impaired kidney function
Overdose:
- No acute poisoning symptoms known

- Sorbitol
- Macrogol 4000
- Maltol
- Caramel flavour
- Cream flavour
- Calcium stearate
Side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can also have side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Possible side effects:
- soft stools or diarrhea
- with prolonged use and high doses: disturbances of mineral balance (e.g., aluminum or magnesium accumulation), especially with impaired kidney function
If side effects occur or symptoms persist, discontinue use and seek medical advice.
