Babu Rajendra Lal Dutt (1818–1889), often referred to as the "Father of Indian Homeopathy":

• Name & Lifespan

  • Babu Rajendra Lal Dutt (often written as Rajendra Dutta)

  • Born 1818 into the wealthy Dutt family in Calcutta (Wellington Square)

  • Died on June 5, 1889 at 71 years old 

• Social Background

  • Wealthy landowner / landlord and successful businessman in Calcutta

  • Invested a large part of his fortune in philanthropic projects and specifically in homeopathy 

• Entry into Homeopathy

  • Came to homeopathy through his own experiences and reading homeopathic authors

  • Decided to practice homeopathy himself and gradually built up a large practice 

• Establishment of Structures

  • Supported the establishment of a homeopathic hospital and a free dispensary (free distribution of medicines) in Calcutta

  • Contributed to the founding and promotion of homeopathic training and treatment centers in Bengal; his name is associated with, among other things, the development that later led to the Calcutta Homoeopathic Medical College (1881) 

• Treatment of Prominent Patients

  • Treated well-known personalities such as Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Raja Sir Radhakanta Deb, whose spectacular improvements brought much prestige to homeopathy 

  • His successful treatments made homeopathy socially acceptable in Bengal's "educated circles"

• Influence on Other Doctors

  • He was the one who convinced and "converted" Dr. Mahendra Lal Sircar (later one of the most famous Indian homeopaths and science organizers) to homeopathy.

  • Through Sircar and other students/followers, homeopathy became further institutionalized and academically disseminated

• Work Ethic & Reputation

  • Known for selfless treatment, especially of the poor – often without fee

  • His work is described in historical analyses as crucial for embedding homeopathy in the general population of Bengal.

• Why he is called "Father of Indian Homeopathy"

  • One of the very first Indian pioneers of homeopathy in the 19th century

  • Established homeopathy in Bengal and beyond, among both common people and elites

  • Gained important opinion leaders (such as Mahendra Lal Sircar and prominent patients) for the method
